State of the Nelson Tasman Youth Sector

The Nelson Tasman Youth Workers Collective has commissioned a report on the state of our youth sector. It describes what's happening across the youth development sector in Nelson–Tasman, and points to some practical ways to support youth-focused organisations.

This report reflects the voices of people working in the sector, rather than the voices of young people themselves.   Seven ideas across four themes have been identified and we would love your feedback on these and on some other key issues affecting young people.

Youthline releases a "State of the Generation" report every two years to gauge the issues affecting young New Zealanders. The biggest issues, according to this year's survey group, were social pressure (25%), cost of living (18%), and the job market (17%). When asked to name their three biggest issues, the results were mental health (59%), lack of job opportunities (52%), bullying (40%), money issues (38%) and climate change (35%).

Te Hiringa Mahara releases a review on support for rangatahi experiencing distress

Te Hiringa Mahara has released a new effectiveness review examining programmes and services that support rangatahi and young people showing early signs of distress. The review focused on interventions evaluated over the past 10 years for young people aged 12–24, looking at whether supports improved distress, anxiety, or depressive symptoms.

‘Owning up’, ‘distracting myself’, ‘accepting it and getting on with life’: Exploring the nuances of youth coping strategies in Aotearoa New Zealand

This study examines how young people in Aotearoa New Zealand identify and respond to stressors in their everyday lives, with a focus on strategies perceived as helpful or unhelpful. Participants identified a recent stressor and described the most and least helpful ways they coped. Inductive content analysis identified seven categories of stressors, including relational challenges, performance pressures, future uncertainty, health concerns, and broader societal issues.

Suicide in young Māori

A recent article published in The Lancet explores suicide among young Māori and calls for a fundamental shift in how suicide is understood and responded to in Aotearoa New Zealand. The piece highlights the ongoing inequities experienced by rangatahi Māori, the importance of culturally grounded and whānau-centred approaches, and the need for prevention efforts that address wider social and structural factors alongside crisis responses.
